From Technology to Socks. What it's like to sell a mobile startup and then build an ecommerce company.
Startups are intense rides that often end in failure. I'll talk through the intense ups and downs of building and selling Motribe to Mxit and then moving to a men's fashion ecommerce startup selling socks.

Why the next billion online will need a lighter internet

The Internet has become a powerful engine for improving quality of life and changing the way people connect. Online accessibility empowers greater access to education, share of voice and access to new markets among other benefits. However, only 3 billion out of the 7.3 billion people in the world have access to the Internet and in South Africa around half the population doesn’t have access. The increase in data traffic is outgrowing the mobile infrastructure, data is expensive and literacy is still low in many areas. How is Opera together with its partners working to create services and technology to help overcome these challenges?

Making the makers OR the tale of a serendipitous quest to build a quintessential makerspace
On a bitter cold winter afternoon I strolled through the streets of Maboneng and stumbled upon a most fantastical location: a place where engineering meets the arts, where design sits next to electronic sensors, where the promise of roasted coffee and freshly baked bread contest for air space. Below, a forlorn boxing gym holds the greatest secret. Empty space, gray walls and a colourful mural. The reincarnation of a dream to build a space where engineers flourish and that designers relish. Now the space is mine and the makerspace will be yours. Help me envision what this space can be!

There’s precious little technology being applied to the social sector in developing markets. Why?

Charity isn’t going to save the world. Is it ok to make money and make a difference at the same time?

This is the origin story of forgood - the online dating site for the social sector, connecting people to Causes and building the tech glue that’s going to increase efficiency and impact in the social sector of South Africa (and eventually other developing nations).

Andy Hadfield (ex Real Time Wine, Street MBA, Tech4Africa regular) and Katherine Robertson (ex founder Africa Works Project, a subsidiary of Rays of Hope) will take you on a journey of what it’s like to build technology in the social sector, what the ecosystem looks like, what the big data possibilities are and most importantly - what the revenue model is and how forgood is going to try and achieve scale (that mythical pot of gold at the end of the developing nation tech rainbow).

The Future Of Telecommunications: A Paradigm Shift Into The Unknown
The Future Of Telecommunications: A Paradigm Shift Into The Unknown

Jatin will be discussing the future of communications pertaining to new trends, new technologies and the migration to cloud services within the mobile arena. Hot topics such as the price of data, mobile termination rates and the death of the smartphone contract will be explored. Consumer insights will also be discussed as the telecommunications industry is primarily driven by the wallets of their customers. The industry is clearly set for an unsustainable path as there are many interrelated factors in play. These include migration to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the emergence of new telecom players and the upcoming price wars. Telecommunications all over the world, including South Africa, has become a volatile and unpredictable entity that is on the cusp of transformation. This is what makes telecoms such an exciting industry to be in. Anything is possible, and he certainly wants to be part of it by sharing his research and expertise to ensure a better future for all."

O3

It is the realisation that something is wrong with the world that has brought you here, reading this sentence. What is O3? Unfortunately, No one can tell you what O3 is, you have to see it for yourself. You take the Blue Pill, and nothing happens, you wake up lost in the illusion of a world in blissful ignorance. You take the Red Pill, and free your mind to be able to see the sometimes painful truth of reality. To see O3 is to take on the power to forge a new path away from a life of redundancy, and rise up Africa up to its rightful place in the world. Careful.. once you choose, you can never go back.

Women love tech... you're just not speaking to them.
The biggest barrier for developers and entrepreneurs is getting their technology in to the hands of the consumer. Women make 94% of the purchasing decisions of the households and yet tech companies are yet to explore new and interesting ways to market it to them. The discussion will be facilitated by Samantha Wright, the editor of Tech Girl, a South African tech blogged aimed at local women, and Zoe Hawkins, Content Editor for Lazygamer.net - Africa's biggest gaming website. The talk will highlight how women utilise technology as well as how we go about marketing it to them.
