FPV 'drone' Racing the start of a new sport
We fly mini "drones" at high speed round short tight courses and through the smallest of gaps for fun. We fly them "First Person View" or FPV through goggles. As if we are sitting inside the miniquad. It's like pod racing from Star Wars, in real life! We hope to share the story of how we grew a community and a e-commerce store over past few months. Plus all the exciting things we have been doing for the FPV Racing community.

Why the next billion online will need a lighter internet

The Internet has become a powerful engine for improving quality of life and changing the way people connect. Online accessibility empowers greater access to education, share of voice and access to new markets among other benefits. However, only 3 billion out of the 7.3 billion people in the world have access to the Internet and in South Africa around half the population doesn’t have access. The increase in data traffic is outgrowing the mobile infrastructure, data is expensive and literacy is still low in many areas. How is Opera together with its partners working to create services and technology to help overcome these challenges?

There’s precious little technology being applied to the social sector in developing markets. Why?

Charity isn’t going to save the world. Is it ok to make money and make a difference at the same time?

This is the origin story of forgood - the online dating site for the social sector, connecting people to Causes and building the tech glue that’s going to increase efficiency and impact in the social sector of South Africa (and eventually other developing nations).

Andy Hadfield (ex Real Time Wine, Street MBA, Tech4Africa regular) and Katherine Robertson (ex founder Africa Works Project, a subsidiary of Rays of Hope) will take you on a journey of what it’s like to build technology in the social sector, what the ecosystem looks like, what the big data possibilities are and most importantly - what the revenue model is and how forgood is going to try and achieve scale (that mythical pot of gold at the end of the developing nation tech rainbow).

How startups can work with government to make citizens lives better

This presentation follows the speaker’s journey, guided by Alan Knott-Craig, into the world of South Africa tech startup’s. It then looks at the shift in focus from pure moneymaking-startup ideas to initiatives that help governments improve the lives of its citizens.

He was employee #1 at Project Isizwe, the largest government-funded public WiFi network in Africa.

With Happimo, a non-profit organisation, the speaker is about to launch Namola – a smartphone solution aimed at helping the Tshwane Metro Police Department provide a better service to the citizens of Tshwane.

Happimo has also identified a number of key government issues that can be easily solved by tech startups. The plan is to launch a new initiative every month for the next year.

Instead of building the solution for each problem Happimo looks to connect the dots between government and tech Startups..

The One Thing The Apache Indians And The Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company Knew Then That Africans Cannot Ignore Now
Africa is in a state of disruption. This provides both significant opportunity and increasing risk. Using a unique backdrop of two similarly disruptive periods in history - the Spanish invasion of the Americas, and the 2nd Industrial Revolution in the USA - I argue that following a relevant, meaningful and visceral cause is the most important step that Africans can make in building your business, organisation or career.

O3

It is the realisation that something is wrong with the world that has brought you here, reading this sentence. What is O3? Unfortunately, No one can tell you what O3 is, you have to see it for yourself. You take the Blue Pill, and nothing happens, you wake up lost in the illusion of a world in blissful ignorance. You take the Red Pill, and free your mind to be able to see the sometimes painful truth of reality. To see O3 is to take on the power to forge a new path away from a life of redundancy, and rise up Africa up to its rightful place in the world. Careful.. once you choose, you can never go back.
